What to do in Kaunas

Probably everyone, before travelling to a new place google the standard questions “what to see in country”, “what to do in city” or “best experiences in Lithuania”, “best things”, “top 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 15, 20, 30 things to see and to do” and all other questions…… They find many good things to do, yet they are typical attractions. Here we want to provide you with some famous and some funny attractions, sometimes not as popular experiences as they truly are.

1. One street to cover it all

Actually two streets. Vilnius Street and Laisvės (Freedom) Avenue. Nevertheless, the only difference is the name, because it is same promenade, which is one of the longest pedestrian walk in Europe –lasting 2.5 kilometers. Starting from the Old town and finishing in the New Town of Kaunas, this street will cover many must see places. Town Hall → Buildings from Medieval Times → St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral Basilica → Historical Presidential Palace → Church of St. Gertrude → Vytautas the Great Monument → St. Michael the Archangel Church… and many more famous places. If anyone would ask me one thing to do and to see in Kaunas city, I would recommend this wander!

2. Bikes, kayaks, scooters and other fun ways for exploring city

There are many funny ways for exploring Kaunas! In the city, you can rent bikes, kayaks or scooters. Use BOLT scooters to drive around city. They are easy to use, plenty of spaces to hop on. Even for taking a short drive through Freedom Avenue. Register with this code GERVE1 and you will get 3€ discount for your first ride (Google Play or App Store). For longer rental of bicycles or kayaks, contact us!

3. EAT & DRINK

One does not need a silver fork to eat good food. Ordinary places usually are the best places to fell the true rhythm of the city and taste the best food.

“Spurginė” – legendary place, baking donuts from 1960 (Laisvės al. 84).

“The Seasons cafe” – best coffee in Kaunas (Laisvės al. 31).

“O kodėl ne?” – the name says “Why not?”, beer garden surrounded by old oaks (Perkūno al. 4).

“Dzem’pub” – taste Lithuanian beer in hidden panoramic roof terrace (Laisvės al. 59).

Remember, the secret of food lies in memory (like the taste of cinnamon). Try those places and you will definitely remember Kaunas city in a tasty way!

4. Ride Kaunas funiculars

Funicular transportation system helps to climb steep inclines. They are similar to elevators and trains. To guide the cart up and down, a funicular primarily relies on a cable, wheels and tracks. Kaunas is the only city in Lithuania that has funiculars: Zaliakalnis Funicular (1931) and Aleksotas Funicular (1935). They make steep hills and high areas more accessible. City’s funiculars comes from the interwar period and still uses the original equipment. The rides are short but fun and it is one of the coolest things to do in Kaunas. Reason for riding funiculars↓

5. Best places for panoramic views of Kaunas

One cannot experience scenery view from a picture. One has to see it oneself! Panorama comes from Greek “all” and “sight”. It means view in wide-angle. Kaunas panoramic places are not only for spectacular view, but also they will provide you with better knowledge about city. Rooftop of Church of the Resurrection (next to the upper station of Zaliakalnis funicular) is one of the biggest attractions while visiting this enormous modernism building. You can either walk up the stairs or use the elevator. Aleksotas Hill Panorama (upper station of Aleksotas funicular) is one of the best panoramic place to fall in love with Kaunas. Admire the panoramas of the city!

6. Bazaars of Kaunas (local marketplaces)

Marketplace or Bazaar is a place where you can get various types of goods. Those trading areas have existed since ancient times. Nowadays people tend to buy all they need in large modern stores – supermarkets. However, market is a historical place where traders set up stalls and buyers browse the merchandise. Visit any bazaar of Kaunas, explore and get interesting experience. Not obligate to buy anything, just stroll around various stalls and try to bargain! Best markets: Aleksoto Turgaviete – Weekends 06-15h (Veiverių 47, Kaunas), Marketplace URMAS – every day 08-18h (Pramonės 16, Kaunas).

7. Sights around city

Inner city area has lots of places to explore and things to do. However, there are MANY places to visit and explore around Kaunas. If you are lucky enough to have a bit more time while visiting Kaunas, here are some suggestions. Hiking in nature (Juniper valley, Dubrava swamp trail), Museums (Lithuanian Aviation Museum, Zoopark Kaunas), Manors and Gardens (Freda Manor near Kaunas Botanical Garden, Raudondvaris Manor), Historical monuments (Ninth Fort and other Kaunas Fortress objects). Finally, Mega Shopping and Leisure Center – a place where you can find and do many things (clothes, meals, playing spots, cinema etc.). Mega is famous for its impressive huge aquarium.
